Waikiki Beach

Waikiki Beach

Waikiki Beach on the southern coast of Oahu was once the playground of the Hawaiian royal family. Its name in Hawaiian means “spouting waters”. Waikiki only really became popular when the Moana Surfrider Hotel opened in 1901.

Today, Waikiki Beach is one of the best-known spots in Hawaii and is overlooked by the Sheraton Waikiki, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and the original Moana Surfrider. Along the main Kalakaua Avenue which borders these golden sands you will find world-class shopping, restaurants and entertainment. Buy authentic Hawaiian crafts, surf boards and the latest fashions in the local shops there.

The two mile beach is often crowded but you can usually find a space to sunbathe, swim, snorkel and surf. The area towards Diamond Head has recreational facilities including the lovely Kapiolani Park. The latest attraction is the Waikiki Beach Walk which is the new leisure centre hotspot for nightlife and entertainment.

Visitors can play in the tropical sunshine, splash in the surf and take a ride in a Waikiki traditional boat – the outrigger canoe. Known as the official “Hawaiian rollercoaster”, rides are guided by a captain and mate who expertly catch the waves.

The statue at the entrance to Waikiki Beach is of Duke Kahanamoku who is regarded as the father of modern-day surfing. Born in 1890 and raised in Waikiki, he won Olympic gold medals in 1912 and 1920. He went on to act in Hollywood films and spread the word of surfing and the Aloha spirit around the world.

If the sport of surfing appeals, take lessons from one of the many operators on Waikiki Beach. You can even hire a Beachboy Valet to assist you on your paddleboard, tell you tales of Old Hawaii or guide your catamaran. Whatever you want to do, your Waikiki beach valet will make it happen!
