Molokai

Molokai

The small Hawaiian island of Molokai is situated between Oahu and Maui. With more than half the population being of native Hawaiian descent, Molokai is proud of its cultural heritage and was the birthplace of hula. A trip to Molokai is certainly a step back in time to a simpler way of life. Ancient fish ponds were built in the 13th century to feed the Hawaiian chiefs and can still be seen today. Visit for a day or stay longer – there is plenty to see and do.

In the sleepy town of Kaunakakai you will find fine gift shops and boutiques in the three-block business district without the crowds of other islands. Sample the onion-and-cheese bread at Kanemitsu’s bakery, then stroll down to the harbor. Take pleasure in the half-mile walk along Hawaii’s longest pier and enjoy the sights of local fisherman and tour boats leaving the nearby harbor.

The Halawa Valley on Molokai is a lush valley of verdant flower meadows, rich in flora and rare Hawaiian plants and animals. The Polynesians are likely to have enjoyed this “Cathedral valley” more than 1300 years ago. Take a hike along the trail through this beautiful unspoilt scenery until you reach the Moola Falls which cascade down some 250 feet in a double stream.

Other great experiences including taking a mule ride along the 3-mile trail to Kalaupapa. These are the highest sea cliffs in the world with a 3,600 foot drop. The seascape and surrounding scenery is magnificent.

Take a tour to the nearby Kalaupapa National Historic Park which was the home of a Belgian missionary in the 1870s. Father Damien treated the exiled victims of Hansen disease and his grave can be seen at the delightful St Philomena Roman Catholic Church.

The long white sandy beach at Papohaku is a beautiful place for bathing and snorkeling, protected by the nearby barrier reef. Those looking for nature and tranquility will certainly find what they are looking for on Molokai.
