Lanai

Lanai

Lanai is one of the smaller Hawaiian Islands and is a great choice for those who want to enjoy the quieter side of Hawaii. This true island get-away, just 9 miles from Maui, does not have a single traffic light, but it does have plenty of privacy and luxury for those who want to escape the crowds and city bustle of Honolulu.

Lanai is so small it does not even have its own international airport. Visitors fly to nearby Honolulu or Kahului Airport and take a local flight to Lanai or catch the ferry from Maui.

Driving around the 141 square miles of Lana Island is easy, although a 4WD vehicle is a good idea. You will come across such diverse sights as the moonlike rocky landscapes of Leahiakawelo and the lush gardens of the Kanepuu Preserve.

Some of the attractions of this lovely island are the two championship golf courses at Koele and Manele. These courses are among the finest in the world and the views from the fairway are unsurpassed. Non-golfers can also enjoy magnificent views by walking or driving the Munro Trail along the volcanic ridge of Lanaihale. The neighboring islands of Maui, Molokai, Kahoolawe and Oahu can all be seen on a clear day.

The aptly named Shipwreck Beach still has the remains of the “Liberty”, a 1940s oil tanker ship which ran aground in the rocky channel. This 8-mile beach is ideal for walking and beach-combing but the currents make it unsuitable for swimming.

Bathers will prefer the golden sandy beach at Polihua on the north shore where you can swim, sunbathe and collect sea shells. At Hulopoe Bay you may see the antics of the delightful spinner dolphins or see whales during the winter season.

Whether you visit Lanai on a romantic break or a family vacation, the island has plenty to offer all ages, from beaches and golf to luxury resorts and unique natural attractions.
