Kauai
The island of Kauai is the oldest and least populated of the Hawaiian Islands. It is known as the “Garden Isle” for its lush green rainforest and beautiful botanical gardens. The island rises steeply from the ocean to its highest point, Kawaikini, which stands 5,243 feet (1598m) above sea level.
Kauai has over 460 inches of rainfall which accounts for the many beautiful waterfalls. One of the best ways to see the spectacular scenery and dramatic 3,000 foot cliffs along the Napali coast is from a helicopter ride. The island’s scenery will truly take your breath away.
One of the most popular areas to visit is Hanalei which has an idyllic landscape setting with small communities of small-town farmers, artists and adventurers. Browse the galleries and markets and pick up some handicrafts made of native Hawaiian hardwoods.
The island was once dependant upon its sugar plantations but now tourism is a key part of its economy. More than 1.2 million visitors visit Kauai every year, either on cruise boats or for a longer vacation.

One of the main attractions on Kauai is the Waimea Canyon, the largest canyon in the Pacific and one of the most scenic canyons in the world. It is 10 miles long and 3,500 feet wide in places and its walls show the different volcanic eruptions and lava flows which occurred long ago. The views from the trails of this “Grand Canyon of the Pacific” are quite spectacular.
Another of Kauai’s natural wonders from its volcanic origins is the Spouting Horn. This is a lava tube on the South Shore through which the surf rushes, spurting water 50 feet into the air. Visitors can also strike the Bell Stone which sounds a note which travels down the Wailua Valley. Royal births were announced this way in the past!
Kauai is the only Hawaiian island to have navigable rivers. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy a scenic trip in kayaks along some of these hidden creeks and lagoons. Visit the Kilauea Lighthouse and capture the wonderful views at sunset.
Kauai has several forest reserves and gardens, including the Na ‘Aina Kair Botanical Gardens which include 240 acres of gardens, sandy beaches and a fern covered canyon.
With so many wonderful places to visit, you can understand why Kauai has been the setting for more than 60 films including Jurassic Park and Raiders of the Lost Ark!
