Hawaii – Home Page

There is nowhere in the world quite like Hawaii. It is an archipelago of tropical islands and smaller islets which lie about 2,160 miles from the California coastline. The main islands are Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui and Hawaii, which is also known as Big Island.

Known for its year-round sunshine, surfing and hula, these volcanic islands each have their individual character and beauty. Visitors are drawn to the islands of Hawaii for their dramatic natural beauty, the unique sights and the warm “Aloha” welcome from the islanders.

Hawaii has a total of 1.2 million residents spread over the larger islands. The capital city is Honolulu, which is on Big Island. Hawaii has its own standard time which is 5 hours behind the US East coast. The languages spoken are English (everywhere!) and Hawaiian. The currency is, of course, the US dollar.

The climate in Hawaii varies according to the different locations and altitudes. The highest peaks are covered in rainforest and have plenty of rainfall which produces stunning waterfalls. Down around the coast it is much warmer and drier. Summer temperatures range between 75F and 88F (24-31C) and winter temperatures are a little cooler. The warm seas are a balmy 74F (23C) all year round.

Hawaii has accommodation to suit all visitors and residents, from beach condos and cottages to luxury resorts and hotels. It is particularly popular in the winter months when “snowbirds” escape the colder northern states and Canada to spend time on these idyllic islands.

Generally people dress casually with resort wear during the day and a dress/shirt and light jacket in the evenings suitable for restaurants and nightlife. Days can be spent sunbathing, surfing and visiting the island’s markets, pineapple farms, botanical gardens, historic churches and other attractions.

Some of the highlights on this island paradise are the 10 miles long Waimea Canyon on Kauai; the tallest sea cliffs in the world on Molokai; the Haleakala Crater on Maui and the Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which is the world’s most active volcano.

Those who are visiting Hawaii for the first time will be entranced by all that the islands have to offer. Be warned, like many who arrived before you, you may never want to leave!
